Books and CDs by Pema Chodron

The works of Pema Chodron – an American-born Tibetan Buddhist, are the most practical, universally applicable material we’ve found – they strike a wonderful balance between needed depth and being easy to understand and work with. Recommended for anyone faced with the groundlessness of life, change, conflict or any situation that is in any way challenging.

When Things Fall Apart - Heart Advice for Difficult Times

The beautiful practicality of her teaching has made Pema Chödrön one of the most beloved of contemporary American spiritual authors – among Buddhists and non-Buddhists alike. This book is a treasury of wisdom for going on living when things fall apart – when we are overcome by pain and difficulties.

In this book she discusses:

  • Using painful emotions to cultivate wisdom, compassion, and courage
  • Communicating so as to encourage others to open up rather than shut down
  • Practices for reversing habitual patterns
  • Methods for working with chaotic situations
  • Ways for creating effective social action

The Places That Scare You: A Guide to Fearlessness in Difficult Times

In The Places That Scare You, Pema Chödrön continues the teachings of When Things Fall Apart, showing how at the core of the most painful experiences lie the seeds of spiritual awakening. Here she presents key teachings on recognizing and cultivating the soft spot that is the gateway to compassion and open-heartedness.

In this book she discusses:

  • The four great catalysts of awakening, and how to integrate them into our lives
  • Why the soft spot is necessary for spiritual awakening
  • The basic goodness that is inherently ours
  • How the three noble principles can enrich everything we do
  • The maitri meditation that multiplies love
  • Why an attitude of don't know can be wiser than the world's greatest spiritual teachings
  • How to keep the heart open with equal fearlessness to both heartache and delight

Comfortable with Uncertainty – 108 Teachings on Cultivating Fearlessness and Compassion

Drawn from Chödrön's previously published books, this anthology leads the reader through essential concepts, themes, and practices on the Buddhist path, such as loving-kindness, meditation, mindfulness, and letting go. Comfortable with Uncertainty does not assume prior knowledge of Buddhist thought or practice, making it a perfect introduction to Chödrön's teaching. Through the course of this book, readers will learn practical methods for heightening awareness and overcoming habitual patterns that block compassion.

Start Where You Are – A Guide to Compassionate Living

With insight and humor, Pema Chödrön presents down-to-earth teachings on how we can overcome our own suffering as well as the suffering of others. This is only possible, the author says, if we start where we are, embracing rather than pushing away the painful aspects of our lives.

Practicing Peace in Times of War

In Practicing Peace in Times of War, Pema Chödrön draws on Buddhist teachings to explore the origins of aggression and war, explaining that they lie no where but within our own hearts and minds. She goes on to explain that, remarkably, the way in which we as individuals respond to challenges in our everyday lives can mean the difference between perpetuating a culture of violence or creating a new culture of compassion. Pema insists that our world will begin to change when each of us, one by one, begins to work for peace at the level of our own behavior, our own habits of thought and action. It's never too late, she tells us, to look within and discover a new way of living.

The Wisdom of No Escape and the Path of Loving Kindness

This book is about saying yes to life, about making friends with ourselves and our world, about accepting the delightful and painful situation of no-exit. It exhorts us to wake up wholeheartedly and to use the abundant richly textured fabric of everyday life as our primary spiritual teacher and guide.

Pema Chodron Audio

Pema Chodron and Alice Walker in Conversation - $14.95
How can human suffering become good medicine? Through tonglen: the ancient Tibetan meditation that transforms pain into compassion on the medium of your own breath. Pema Chodron and Alice Walker in Conversation reveal the revolutionary power of tonglen through a dialogue between two hearts and minds forged in very different cultures.

Good Medicine  - CD or DVD
On Good Medicine, Pema Chodron reveals the time-tested Buddhist antidote to suffering – and shows how to apply it in your own life. The simple and elegant meditation practice known as tonglen, she teaches, is the perfect medicine for ordinary people like ourselves. Through tonglen, we can use life's difficulties as a way to befriend ourselves, accept the past we have rejected.

True Happiness
Happiness is your birthright—and it is readily available at any given moment, Pema Chodron teaches. So why do we live in such suffering? The potential for happiness is not based on outer things – they come and go, causing us misery. We're always chasing after something, trying to avoid the difficult places. But there are a lot of small sweetnesses that we ignore.

From Fear to Fearlessness
Where will we look when we are afraid? How do we find strength? In what can we place our trust? According to Tibetan Buddhism, there are four noble aspirations known as The Four Great Catalysts of Awakening to cultivate strength and openness in any situation.

Getting Unstuck
"Pema Chodron demonstrates how effective the Buddhist point of view can be in bringing order into disordered lives."
Publishers Weekly.
Have you ever had an itch and not scratched it? In the Buddhist tradition, this points to a vast paradox: that by refraining from our urge to scratch, great peace and happiness is available.

Awakening Compassion
For more than 800 years, Tibetan Buddhists have used the practice of lojong, ormind training, to transform difficulties into insights. Lojong training is grounded in a special meditation technique and complemented by 59 written maxims - a treasury of practical wisdom that inspires everyday awareness.

The Noble Heart
You can't get away from suffering. That's the good news, teaches Pema Chodron. For at the core of your most painful experiences, perhaps more than anywhere else, you will find the seeds of your awakening. On The Noble Heart, this beloved American-born Buddhist nun shows you how vulnerability is your greatest spiritual resource on the path through life's difficulties.

Shambhala: The Sacred Path of the Warrior by Chogyam Trungpa
There is a basic human wisdom that can help solve the world’s problems. It doesn’t belong to any one culture or region or religious tradition – though it can be found in many of them throughout history. It’s what Chögyam Trungpa called the sacred path of the warrior. The sacred warrior conquers the world not through violence or aggression, but through gentleness, courage, and self-knowledge. The warrior discovers the basic goodness of human life and radiates that goodness out into the world for the peace and sanity of others. That’s what the Shambhala teachings are all about, and this is the book that has been presenting them to a wide and appreciative audience for more than twenty years.

Yoga Classes

We are often asked about yoga and what kind of class to check out. There are literally thousands of iterations of what people call ‘yoga’ out there and some will be for you and some won’t. Here are two classic branches of yoga that we recommend:

Iyengar Yoga – Recommended if you’re starting your yoga path. The focus on proper form and technique will give you a solid grounding that will serve you for the rest of your life. It’s also recommended if you’re interested in going beyond just the physical benefits to explore the breath and balance in your life. Rob has moved through many interests in yoga but always returns to Iyengar-based yoga.

Ashtanga Yoga – Recommended if you’re extremely active already and want a challenging ‘yoga workout’. This set series of postures will especially help you to become leaner, stronger, and more flexible.

Email us the name/description of a class you’re thinking of taking if you’d like our perspective – info@quixoteconsulting.com

Yoga Multi-media

We recommend developing a yoga home practice to fully experience the benefits of yoga. If you have an iPod, the best tool by far for developing your practice is Rodney Yee and Colleen Saidman’s Yoga Club (www.gaiamyogaclub.com).

With this self-paced 12-week program, you receive a combination of nine online yoga videos and 63 podcast classes covering over 75 poses. At the beginning of each week, Rodney and Colleen introduce you to a category of yoga poses (forward bends, backbends, twists, inversions and more) with modifications for different levels, and sequencing principles for personalizing your own yoga program.

Yoga DVDs

We recommend Rodney Yee DVDs. Look through this list and pick one or two that strike your fancy. They’re available at Amazon.com or his website www.yeeyoga.com. We especially like Energy Balance Yoga, Intermediate Yoga, Yoga Burn, and the Hip-opening segment on the Advanced Yoga DVD.
