The air is changing in the northeast, breathing new life in as the snow finally melts and the ground softens. The daffodils are pushing up through last year’s leaves and the spring peepers are peeping. This is a perfect time to get reacquainted with the joys of the body, whether you get your bicycle out for the first ride of the season or head out for a walk on your lunch break.
The Office Yoga Break, inspired by our Office Yoga program, is a new feature this month. Take a moment now at your desk to breathe, relax and stretch your body. You’ll return to your work renewed, energized and with a little bit of that wonderful spring energy to help with the challenges at hand.
May you have giddy moments of April foolishness, breathe well and be inspired by the world outside to grow the best in you.

Office Yoga Break
Take a quick break from your work and try these yoga poses right at your desk. They open the hips, release the tension in back, chest and throughout the body,
strengthen the back, and allow breath to flow more freely.
Seated mountain pose
Sit forward on chair, feet below the knees.
Press down on tops of thighs.
Lift and open chest, soften lower ribs, sink shoulder blades down the back.
Lift with thumbs under armpits to help this action.

Seated forward bend
There are three variations: Try all three. Each provides a different
benefit. Decide which of the three gives you the most benefit.
A –
Spread legs a little wider than hips distance apart, feet parallel.
Inhale, then exhale with your upper body forward; rest your forearms on
desk with hands parallel.

B –
Spread legs a little wider than hips distance apart, feet parallel.
Inhale, then exhale, moving the upper body forward. Hold elbows with hands on desk.
Rest head on crossed arms and allow back to release.
|
|
C –
Spread legs a little wider than hips distance apart, feet parallel.
Inhale, then exhale, moving the upper body forward.
Hold elbows and release forward, letting head float free with gravity.
Allow the strength of legs to release spine.

Breathe
Breathing is not only the most important part of yoga, it is the most important part of being alive. Your body completes this simple, beautiful task every moment of your life without the mind having to keep track of it, or put it on the To Do list. Beyond feeding the body with oxygen, breathing can pull you out of fretting about the past or future and connect you to the present moment. There is no other place, no other time that the breath can happen than right here, right now.
You may find it helpful to close your eyes.
Notice how you’re naturally breathing. Follow your breath’s path. Is it labored, shallow, quick, full, excited?
Take a full, slow inhale, filling and relaxing the belly. Don’t strain, just allow the filling of new life, new oxygen, new energy.
